Matthew Johnson - Head Coach & Owner
Matthew is know by many names Matt, Coach Matt or "Matty "as his teammates often called him. Coach Matt has been playing and training in the sport of hockey for over 35 years.
At age 10, he fell in love with the training aspect of the game after meeting Russian Red Army Coach Mark Vershinin. As a result, while he was a young player, Matt learned the Russian training methods and the combined them with the North American philosophy to create a uniquely blended training program. Matt loves helping players reach their full potential no matter their skill level. Matt's passion for training and the game of Ice Hockey is unmatched.
Coach Matt grew up in South Jersey, where he still resides with his wife and three children.
Matt is a USA HOCKEY AND SAFESPORT CERTIFIED coach and works actively with many of the teams in the region.
Jon Michael Gendron - Elite Skills Coach
Coach Jon is a one of a kind. When we say "Hockey Is Life" this is not just a statement but very much the case for Jon as he was born into the hockey scene. His father worked with the Philadelphia Flyers during their Stanley Cup years. This lead Jon to lead a 35+ year career playing and coaching hockey.
Many of Jon's students and players have had success making it to D1, D3, Juniors and even to the NHL. Bobby Ryan of the Detroit Red Wings was not only one of his favorite players but he was also one of his star pupils on and off the ice.
Coach Jon actively owned & operated EXCELL sports training. He is a licensed sport nutritionist and trainer. With this specialty, he has worked with a broad spectrum of athletes from high school to professional players including some Philadelphia Eagles players. Jon's strongest off ice focuses are speed and agility. Jon has run camps all over the country with athletes of many levels. He has the patience and skill to help any player willing to put their best foot forward.
Some of the teams in the local area that Jon has coached are Holy Cross, Jaguars AA, Thunderbirds to name a few.
Mark Vershinin- Skills Coach
Coach Mark is an accomplished skills coach. His experience is a little different than the rest of our team, but he brings unique techniques to Mj2's program. Mark was the past head coach of the Russian Sokul Kiev development team and his knowledge of the game of hockey and Russian training methods is unsurpassed. He has had great success in developing players to succeed to the next level of play with his training methods. Many have played from High School prep level to college and even into the NHL. Mark has helped many players around the world succeed in their level of play such as: Bobby Ryan(1st round pick Anaheim), Vince Malts(7th round pick Vancouver), Anthony DeAngelo(1st round pick Tampa Bay), Jimmy Lodge(3rd round pick Winnipeg), Evan Barratt(3rd round pick Chicago) and his own son, Alex, who played D1 college hockey at Cornell.
Dennis Zakroff- Goalie Coach
Coach Dennis earned his USA Hockey Advanced Coaching Certification in 1997. He is the former Head Coach of Temple University Club Ice Hockey Team and former assistant coach of Paul VI High School Hockey team. Dennis started his coaching career teaching Learn-to-Play Hockey clinics at Twin Rinks of Pennsauken (SkateZone of Pennsauken) and helped run numerous goalie clinics. He coached Limited Travel teams ages PeeWee through Midgets before he moved on to restart Temple's Program. He has been playing adult league hockey as a goalie for the past 30 years. Dennis has worked with goalies of various ages for many years through out his Ice Hockey career. In addition to coaching Dennis has been an active USA Ice Hockey on-ice official for the past 28 years.
Jennifer Edwards- Powerskating Instructor
With over 40 years of skating experience, Coach Jenn is a former South Atlantic and National Collegiate competitor in figure skating, a USFS silver medalist in Ice Dancing and Compulsory Figures. She spent some time training in speed skating at the Petit National Olympic Ice Center in Milwaukee, played one year of hockey for the University of Pennsylvania Womens Ice Hockey Club. Jenn has experience overseeing skating programs as the former skating director at the Medford Ice Rink an U of Penn Class of 1923 Rink. She is a member of the USFS, PSA, USA Hockey, and Learn to Skate USA programs. She is certified in Power Skating levels 1-3 and USA Hockey level one certified. Jenn specializes in power skating, edge quality, and control, speed and power. She enjoys working with all ages, levels and abilities.
Jenn has a BSN in Nursing along with a Masters of Education for Marquette University in Milwaukee where she did the bulk of her training. When she is not at the rink coaching hockey and figure skating. She is working as a specialty pediatric nurse at CHOP.
Charlie Vasaturo-Defensive Skills/Powerskating
Charlie Vasaturo has been a great addition to our MJ2 staff as our defensive skills coach. Charlie is a South Jersey native and grew up playing hockey at Hollydell Ice Arena. Chariie played NCAA D1 College Hockey for Union where he was team captain and won an NCAA championship in 2014. He went on to play for 4 years as a professional in the ECHL for the Reading Royals and the Kalamazoo Wings. Charlie is the current coach of the Philadelphia Hockey Club AAA 16U Premier team.
Chris Gentile-Skills Coach
We are happy to welcome the newest member of our MJ2 coaching staff. Chris grew up playing youth hockey at Hollydell Ice Arena for Guy Gaudreau as well as Little Flyers for Stephane Charbonneau and Jr. Flyers. He continued his hockey career for Bishop Eustace Prep playing for former Flyers team captain, Keith Primeau, where he earned 1st Team All-State and 1st Team All-Conference honors. Chris spent time playing in the NAHL, OJHL and ECHL. He battled back from an almost career ending injury and played ACHA hockey at West Chester University. He is serving as Philadelphia Hockey Club AAA 16U Premier assistant coach to Charlie Vasaturo for the 2022-23 season.
